50 Minutes

I have not had a good morning at work. It's been pretty shit. So when lunchtime comes around I'm almost glad to get out for a run.

I'm getting used to the feeling of being alone inside my own head and not actually thinking about anything when I run. That's proving to be then nicest part of the whole thing, being able to switch off from everything else around me.

The run is hard, it's cold, I'm tired and I'm still not 100% over the bug, but I manage 5 miles. So that'll do for now.



Currently listening (courtesy of a recommendation from the ace Martin Little) - A Very Successful Cover Up. Which is all about Watergate and so very resonant with the current US political scene.

26.2 miles in 5 hrs 37 minutes and 26 seconds It's a funny thing, this marathon lark. After 4 months of training (including 3 weeks of taper, in which I appeared to have completely forgotten what the whole concept of running was all about) I woke up on the morning of the 22nd of April 2018 calmer than I have ever felt before. The thunder storm that woke me up at 1am, wasn't a great deal of fun, but we'll gloss over that. But I was calm. Centred, even. Yeah, I know, weird AF. Long Run - Loopa de loopa

Long Run:  18 Miles - 2hrs 58mins I had planned to run out to Musselburgh but the wind off the sea was horrendous. The voice in my head was telling me to jack it in from the get go. So I made an executive decision. Based on how rotten I’ve been feeling about my progress, I decided to go back to where I started running, switch my brain off and just keep doing loops of the Warriston Path till I hit 18 miles. I realise it’s not the most stimulating of courses but it gave me the opportunity to have a proper talk with myself.  Run was ok. Weather was shite.  18 Miles in the bag. 😬

Taper

It's been a funny old week. After the proper elation of finishing the 22 miler, things have really taken a turn for the worse this week. I'd been told that taper does funny things to your head. However, I really couldn't see how running less  miles could be a problem. Oh, how wrong I was. I think I can pinpoint exactly where things went wrong. Instead of going to my usual conditioning and yoga class on Monday, I went to a gig - well, I was on holiday, it was Easter and it's what Jesus would have wanted. I then started to relax.  Bad move all round, really.  A malaise set in far too quickly for my liking and the mid week runs that I did have planned, didn't happen.  However I kept telling myself that it wasn't a problem.
